The Brinell hardness number (BHN or HB ) isexpressed as the load P divided by surface area ofthe indentation.giving an average value of two readings of thediameter of the indentation at right angle. The load is applied for a standard time (~30 s), andthe diameter of the indentation is measured. The Brinell hardness test consists in indenting the metalsurface with a 10-mm diameter steel ball at a load range of 500-3000kg, depending of hardness of particular materials. Brinell introduced the first standardised indentation-hardnesstest in 1900.

- The indentor is dropped onto the metal surface and the hardness is expressed as the energy of impact.Suranaree University of Technology Tapany Udomphol May-Aug 2007.
- Different types : Brinell, Meyer, Vickers, Rockwell hardness tests.3) Rebound or dynamic hardness.
- Major important engineering interest for metals.
- Not suited for metal annealed copper = 3, martensite = 7.2) Indentation hardness.
- Important to mineralogists, using Mohs’scale 1= talc, 10 = diamond.

Introduction There are three general types of hardness measurements1) Scratch hardness (for people who are concerned with mechanics of materials, hardness is more likely to mean the resistance to indentation) Deeper or larger impression Softer materials Hardness impression Tapany Udomphol May-Aug 2007Suranaree University of Technology Introduction Definition Hardness is a resistance to deformation. Relationships between hardness and tensile properties will be made and finally factors affecting hardness of metals will be discussed.Suranaree University of Technology Tapany Udomphol May-Aug 2007.This chapter provides fundamental knowledge of hardness of materials along with different methods of hardness measurements normally used.Hardness at elevated temperaturesSuranaree University of Technology Tapany Udomphol May-Aug 2007.Relationship between hardness and the flow curve.Chapter 9Hardness TestSubjects of interest
